Gordie Howe International Bridge

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a landmark infrastructure project connecting Windsor, Ontario, with Detroit, Michigan, creating a vital new crossing between Canada and the United States. As part of this expansive project, Architectural Polymers developed two distinct sets of custom concrete form liners for architectural precast concrete elements on the U.S. side: the Jefferson Avenue security wall and the exterior cladding of the U.S. Port of Entry facility.

Inspired by the distinctive star-shaped design of nearby Historic Fort Wayne, the Jefferson Avenue security wall features a custom concrete pattern that transforms a functional security barrier into a striking architectural feature. A fractal-inspired pattern was created based on the fort's iconic star geometry, with shapes that grow and shrink along the wall to create a changing visual experience for pedestrians and cyclists. The raised, faceted surfaces interact with natural light and shadow, adding depth and dimension to the concrete. Warm, brick-toned colors complement the historic character of Fort Wayne, reinforcing the connection between the new infrastructure and the surrounding community. Standing 8 feet tall and extending more than 4,000 feet, the wall demonstrates how custom concrete form liners can bring artistic detail and local identity to large-scale infrastructure projects.

Architectural Polymers also created custom form liners for the exterior concrete cladding of the U.S. Port of Entry facility. The design incorporates the soundwave pattern of The Star-Spangled Banner, giving the American national anthem a permanent architectural presence through the building's concrete façade. This innovative application demonstrates the versatility of custom concrete form liners, translating an intangible element of American culture into a distinctive, three-dimensional surface.

Together, these two applications showcase the creative possibilities of custom precast concrete form liners for transportation infrastructure, security walls, and large architectural facilities. By combining precision fabrication with thoughtful design, Architectural Polymers helps architects, engineers, precasters, and contractors turn complex design concepts into durable concrete surfaces that balance function, visual impact, and a meaningful connection to place.
