Flight 93 Memorial

Project Details

The Flight 93 National Memorial commemorates the crash of United Airlines Flight 93, which was one of four aircraft hijacked in the September 11, 2001, attacks. The memorial is located in Stonycreek Township, Somerset County, Pennsylvania, about 2 miles north of Shanksville and 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh. The project was completed in phases and involved the creation of a new form liner.

The main entrance to the Field of Honor occurs at its northwestern edge. The Entry Portal is approached through a clearing of trees on a black slate plaza marking the Flight Path. High textured concrete walls frame the sky where Flight 93 descended to the crash site. The walkway leads visitors through the first wall into a textured concrete visitors entrance plaza featuring Red Maple trees and through a second portal to give visitors their first look at the expanse of the Field of Honor and the crash site. Architectural Polymers pattern #512 Hand Hewn Hemlock was utilized to texture the concrete walls that populate the site.
