Cortex Innovation Community

The mixed-use gateway building at the Cortex Innovation Community in St. Louis was designed by CannonDesign to complement the district’s nationally recognized institutions while maintaining a pedestrian-friendly scale. The architecture features two stacked box forms, with the upper level dramatically cantilevered beyond the lower to create a striking visual profile. Large areas of curtainwall glazing on the north and south elevations frame views and activate the streetscape, reinforcing the building’s role as a centerpiece in this vibrant innovation hub.

Precast concrete played a critical role in meeting both design and construction challenges. Fabricated off-site for quality control and accelerated installation, the precast enclosure enabled quick project delivery despite the tight urban site and aggressive schedule. The first level is clad in precast panels featuring the 311A Random Striated Rib formliner pattern. Double sealant joints and polyurethane foam insulation deliver a durable, low-maintenance, and energy-efficient envelope, while fly ash in the mix supports sustainability goals.
